The Vulnerable Predator

In the Maasai Mara, survival is never guaranteed. Cheetahs are among the most vulnerable of Mara's major predator.Built for speed rather than strength ,they are exceptional hunters but are often outmatched by the larger predators they share ecosystem with .

A cheetah can successfully chase down and kill its prey yet still lose the meal moments later. Cheetahs depends on fresh kills.

They do not feed carcasses once the meat has begun to decay, which means every hunt carries enormous pressure. A failed hunt means wasted energy, while a successful hunt does not always guarantee a meal. I have witnessed this many times .A cheetah chases the chase.It brings down its prey.The exhaustion of the hunt is still visible in its body.Then the hyenas arrive

The cheetah is often forced to retreat as the stronger animals take over the kill. The hunt won.The meal is lost .This is the world in which Nashipae's cubs were born

The Four Cubs

In 2023, Nashipae gave birth to four cubs—three sisters and a brother.

I began following their story from the time they were young and vulnerable.

At that stage, they were entirely dependent on their mother. They followed closely behind her through the grasslands, learning the first lessons of survival with every step.

Nashipae was their protector, provider and teacher.

She had to hunt for them while protecting them from predators. She had to lead them through a landscape where danger could come from almost anywhere.

For cheetah cubs, the early years are among the most dangerous stages of life.

Their survival is never guaranteed.

Watching Over Their Journey

The Mara Cheetah Project played an important role in monitoring and following the lives of Nashipae and her cubs.

Through continued research and monitoring, the project has contributed to a deeper understanding of cheetahs in the Maasai Mara and the challenges facing this endangered species.

Following cheetahs over time is important because a single sighting tells only a small part of their story.

The lives of these animals are constantly changing.

Cubs are born,they grow,learn,separate from their mothers,some survive and others do not.

The work of monitoring these individuals helps build a clearer picture of the challenges facing cheetahs and the importance of protecting them.

Over the years, I watched the four cubs grow.

The small, vulnerable cubs that once followed closely behind Nashipae became stronger and more confident.

I watched their personalities emerge.

I watched them learn to navigate the Mara.

I watched them move from complete dependence on their mother towards independence.

The three sisters and their brother were slowly becoming cheetahs capable of facing the world on their own.

And remarkably, all four survived.

The Separation

Eventually, the four cubs separated from their mother. It was the natural progression of their lives.Everything Nashipae had done since they were born had prepared them for this moment.She had protected them.

Now they had to begin their own lives.For a mother in the wild,this is the ultimate test.For Nashipae ,all four of her cubs made it through that dangerous period of their lives.

Cheetah siblings do not always follow the same path after leaving their mother.

Male cheetahs, particularly brothers from the same litter, often form coalitions. Staying together can offer advantages as they establish and defend territories and navigate the challenges of life on their own.

Female cheetahs, however, generally become solitary. Once they leave their mother, they disperse and establish their own home ranges.

Another Litter

But Nashipae's story did not end with the independence of her first four cubs.

She later gave birth to another litter.

This time, the outcome was tragically different.

The cubs were killed by hyenas.

The contrast between the two litters is a painful reminder of how uncertain life is for cheetahs.

One litter of four survived to adulthood. Another litter was lost.In the wild ,survival is never promised

I have had the privilege of following Nashipae's story since 2023. Not as a single moment.Not as one photograph but as a journey unfolding over time.

I have watched four vulnerable cubs grow into fully grown cheetahs.

I have witnessed the world they had to survive in—the hunts, the dangers, the competition and the constant threat of losing everything.

I have seen how quickly a successful hunt can become a lost meal.

I have seen how fragile survival can be.

And I have seen what makes the survival of Nashipae's first four cubs so remarkable.

Four lives that made it through the most dangerous years of their existence.

Nashipae was their mother. Their protector,provider and teacher.

And ultimately, the beginning of their survival.

Her legacy is not simply that she gave birth to four cubs.

It is that she raised them in a world where every meal can be stolen, every encounter can become a threat and every day alive is an achievement.

All four survived.

And that is Nashipae's legacy.
