I was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya. Life wasn't handed to me on a silver platter, but those early challenges shaped my resilience, determination, and the way I see the world today.
My journey with photography began in childhood through a community organization that used sports to keep young people away from crime and drug abuse. We had only one camera, which our trainer used during photography sessions. When it wasn't available, my friends and I would sketch cameras on paper and imagine ourselves behind the viewfinder. Those simple moments ignited a passion that would eventually become my life's work.
A turning point came when I joined the Canon Miraisha Programme. I was recognized as the top student during a street photography workshop, an achievement that opened doors to the professional photography industry. Through Canon, I gained valuable technical skills, hands-on experience with professional equipment, and mentorship that strengthened my foundation as a visual storyteller.
My professional career began in sports photography, covering football for organizations including the Bundesliga Youth Ambassador Programme under TSG Hoffenheim in Kenya, Kariobangi Sharks, and the Football Kenya Federation. Although sports photography introduced me to the industry, I never wanted to be defined as a single genre. I believe photography is curiosity, and I enjoy exploring different subjects whenever there is a meaningful story waiting to be told.
I later worked as a photojournalist in a busy newsroom, where I learned the importance of speed, accuracy, and working under pressure. Covering real-life events taught me to anticipate decisive moments and tell honest stories through images. One principle has always guided me throughout my career:
"Remember why you started."
My journey has not been without challenges. Along the way, I have lost equipment, faced setbacks, and experienced moments that tested both my career and my personal resilience. Those experiences strengthened my character and reminded me that growth often comes through adversity. One day, I hope to share these stories during my first photography exhibition.
Giving back has always been an important part of my journey. Together with other creatives I grew up with, we founded an annual community initiative through Ruaraka Rising Stars, bringing together resources to organize a football tournament for young people in our community. Beyond the competition, we provide photography training, mentorship, and recognize outstanding participants with awards and opportunities.
I also volunteer for my time by mentoring aspiring photographers and, whenever possible, lending my own equipment to those who are just starting out. Having begun my own journey with limited resources, I understand how one opportunity can change a person's future. Supporting the next generation of creatives is my way of giving back to the community that helped shape me.
I am grateful to my family, friends, mentors, and everyone who has supported me throughout this journey. My career has never been built alone, and I appreciate every person who believed in me before I believed in myself.
Photography has become more than a profession—it is the language through which I express my thoughts, emotions, and perspective on the world.
My journey eventually led me to the Maasai Mara, where I joined JW Marriott Maasai Mara Lodge as a Resident Photographer. There, I introduced guests to wildlife photography, guided them in using Canon equipment, and helped them preserve unforgettable safari experiences. Moving from city life to wilderness was a significant adjustment, and my first few months were challenging. Over time, however, the Maasai Mara became home. Surrounded by extraordinary wildlife and the people dedicated to protecting it, I discovered a new purpose in conservation storytelling.
My commitment to photography also led to another important milestone—becoming a Canon Certified Trainer. This role allows me to share my knowledge with photographers of all skill levels while continuing to grow as an educator and storyteller.
Beyond my professional work, I continue to volunteer with conservation organizations and contribute wildlife stories and photography to publications, including Turning Point Magazine. I have also completed Reuters Digital Journalism Training, further strengthening my skills in visual storytelling and ethical journalism.
